Setting Boundaries - A Crucial Step for the Work at Home Mom

In today's modern world, it's not surprising to know that among the self-employed; women are more likely to work from home than men. Work-at-home moms who juggle a family and a job should know how to handle both work as well as family life. Achieving a "life and work" balance, can be challenging for working moms.

When you're a work-at-home mom, trying to balance your business with family, it's difficult to find time for work while taking care of a busy household. Although working from home gives you the flexibility and being there for your kids, sometimes it becomes difficult to balance your family life and your work. Working from home and at the same time catering to the needs of kids is often like walking the line of a tightrope. A wrong step and the balancing act comes to an abrupt end.

Along with the tight schedules, an array of projects and client phone calls comes - preparing meals, getting the kids dressed and planning daily activities. It's always said "A mother's work is never done". When you think you're through, you find that you've only just begun.

It's not an easy feat to manage the balancing act of family vs. work demands. Awareness is a vital component to the balancing act. It's all about understanding that in order to be successful in home office, you need to set boundaries, make good decisions, take good care of yourself and be passionate about what you do. It's not only understanding thing, but also being aware of how each of these relate to you, as a home office worker.

As the saying goes, "Good fences make good business", one of the important elements of any home office is to set boundaries. Boundaries are nothing but the limits that define what is acceptable and unacceptable in your personal and professional life. When working from home, you must set some boundaries and say no for staying motivated. Saying no, in fact, protects your mental health and your time.

Setting boundaries for home office encompasses:

  • Time Boundaries - The time commitment to family, work as well as yourself.
  • Individual Boundaries - The division between yourself and the individuals you live with (family, friends) and work with(colleagues, clients).
  • Physical Boundaries - The physical separation of work place and home.

Each of these boundaries will have to be addressed to ensure you keep on walking that tightrope steadily. If boundaries are not set, it becomes difficult to balance yourself and your work. You should also keep in mind that setting boundaries will not work solely on their own; you must communicate and enforce them to be successful in your business.

Boundaries are one of the many considerations when combining a professional life with life inside the home. However, it's a step that you can implement for ensuring a happy co-existence in work and family demands. After all, you made the choice to work at home for a reason, go and make it a successful one!
